Single Women

"I've sometimes thought of marrying, and then I've thought again."
- Cass Daley

When women's suffrage really began to take hold in this country, aside from voting, certain other rights were afforded women that had previously been reserved strictly for men. Not only legal rights, but social norms as well began to change rapidly. Women, previously subordinate to men in all aspects of public life, suddenly began to claim a sovereign status.

The roaring '20s saw flappers and the '40s saw women pitching in for the war effort. All of this placed single women on the ascendant. With the pendulum swinging in favor of independence -- as marriage lost its monopoly on determining a woman's availability -- it became more difficult for men to identify who was single and who was a waste of their wooing ability.

The lack of a ring, or a pin on a sweater, is no longer the signal that a woman is interested. Men have to do a great deal more research into the lives of that creature known as the single woman.

Single Women on AM

The dating world has been changing for a long time. Women are independent creatures who want to maintain their femininity. They wish to maintain the civility of the past and combine it with a modern sense of independence and equality. This is powerful camouflage. And this is why AskMen.com is here to help you learn to identify and meet modern single women.

Single Women Fact

A man's physical appearance isn't all that important to a single woman; in fact, physical appearance consistently ranks lower than honesty, loyalty, intelligence, since of humor and employment status when surveyed

What The Hills?!? Holly Montag Joins Team Kristin

Excuse Lauren Conrad if she can't stand up straight these days. The newly retired reality star is still pulling that knife out of her back.

In an interview with E! News, Holly Montag showed serious love for new co-star Kristin Cavallari.

"I think Kristin's openness is going to be far more entertaining than anything Lauren had to offer," Holly said. "Lauren's always been very conservative, which is good for her values, but Kristin just wants to put everything on the line because she thinks reality is real. Kristin doesn't hide anything. She's seriously the most real girl you'll meet in reality television."

Isn't that like being the tallest person at a midget convention?

Holly Montag PicThe Fabulous Lauren Conrad

Holly Montag admires Kristin Cavallari for being "real." We admire Montag if she was able to keep a straight face while making that statement.

Despite implying that LC is fake, Holly wishes nothing but the best for her pal:

"I'm happy she's done with this. Now, that she's out if it, I have no doubt she'll be a successful designer. She's so talented and driven."

Meanwhile, Stacie Hall - the bartender that's dating Frankie Delgado - has already partied with Kristin.

"Kristin's a really fun, outgoing person, and I think we're going to have a great time continuing to film," Stacie said. "Lauren is a good, good girl, but Kristin is more outgoing and crazy."

Spears sued for running over photog's foot

A former TMZ photographer sued Britney Spears on Friday over an incident in which his foot was run over.

Ricardo Mendoza filed a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles on Friday against her, claiming that Spears negligently operated her car and committed assault and battery when she ran over his foot in Beverly Hills on Oct. 18, 2007.

Several media outlets picked up footage of the incident, including celebrity gossip site TMZ, where Mendoza worked at the time.

TMZ, which first reported the lawsuit, auctioned off his tire-stained sock and donated the proceeds to charity.

Mendoza is also suing a pair of Spears' companies, claiming their agents should have known that Spears wasn't capable of properly driving the vehicle.

The incident happened during a turbulent period for Spears, who hours earlier had lost custody of her two sons. The singer, whose most recent album is "Circus," has since regained visitation rights.

Her father, Jamie, has maintained control of the 27-year-old Spears' personal and financial affairs since February 2008.

Spears was accused of running over another photographer's foot a month after the incident involving Mendoza, but prosecutors said in that incident it was more the photographer's fault. They declined to press charges.

An e-mail message sent to Spears' publicist seeking comment was not immediately returned Friday.

User Post: Sunscreen Sense

Tis the season to lather up...here's all you need to know about protecting your skin this summer
Susan Crandell, BettyConfidential.com

There's not a woman in America who doesn't know the perils of tanning (skin cancer, wrinkles, sun spots) - and precious few who aren't still tempted to tan. If you crave a summery glow, use a fake tanner (with subtler shadings, they no longer make you look like a hot dog) and slather on the sunscreen whenever you're outdoors. And remember, even if you have darker skin naturally, you still need sunscreen to protect against skin cancer.

Checklist for Sunscreens

UVA/UVB Protection. UVA rays cause wrinkles, freckles and spots. UVB rays cause sunburn. Both can cause skin cancer. Sunscreens work by absorbing, reflecting or scattering these rays, using ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and mexoryl, which provide protection against both types. Check the ingredients list or look for sunscreens labeled "broad spectrum UVA/UVB."

SPF. Sun Protection Factor numbers rise from 4 up into the stratosphere. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that a 30 sunscreen will allow you to stay in the sun twice as long. In reality, SPR 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays; SPF 30 blocks 97%. (Ratings for UVA protection are due out this summer.) Some skin professionals recommend 15 or above, but why not go for the gold and get a 30 SPF screen.

Application. The classic advice from the American Academy of Dermatology is a full ounce (think shot glass) for a whole-body application. That's a lot of sunscreen, so apply what you think you need, and then a whole bunch more. If you're using one of the new spray-on screens, make sure you can see it glistening all over your skin, that you haven't left any dry spots. Ideally, apply half an hour before you go outdoors.

Sweating, swimming and rubbing yourself dry afterward are just a few of the things that can cut into your protection. If you're engaging in outdoor activities, look for "water-resistant" (40 minutes staying power) or "very water-resistant" (80 minutes).

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, even on cloudy or hazy days and even under a shirt (a typical white T-shirt has a measly SPF of 3). And don't forget your UVA/UVB protection sunglasses too; these rays can damage the cornea and contribute to the development of cataracts.

5 Things Keeping You From a Flatter Stomach

One thousand crunches a day? Don’t waste your time. Instead, the best way to get a flatter stomach involves a few clever changes to your diet and workout…and about 970 fewer sit-ups.

By Jenny Bailly

The quest for flat abs knows no shame (or too much indolence). For proof, behold the Abs in a Box kit. It contains semipermanent body stain, eight shadow and highlighting powders, and a booklet explaining how to use the above to create a six-pack—all for $69. Which would be a bargain if those abs were real. But attaining flat abs isn’t a matter of painting by numbers—or even of executing a mind-numbing series of crunches. Consider this: Stomach flab is easier to lose than the padding on your butt and thighs; commit to shedding a few pounds, and the ones around your waist disappear first. Once they’re gone, a judicious mix of ab moves can carve out smooth, visible muscles over time—and not just for the genetically preprogrammed. Here, five ways to create your own (genuine) ab masterpiece.

Problem: You have too much fat all over.

You could have Jessica Alba’s muscle structure and nothing to show for it if you’re carrying around extra pounds. “No one’s ever going to see those strong muscles as long as a layer of fat sits on top of them,” says personal trainer Gunnar Peterson, who works with Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen. Interval training is the most effective way to exercise. A study in the International Journal of Obesity found that women who put in 20 minutes on a stationary bike three times a week—but alternated 8-second bursts of speedy pedaling with 12-second rest periods— trimmed more from their midsections over 15 weeks than those who cycled at a slower, but steady, pace for 40 minutes. Researchers believe that interval training triggers the body to release adrenaline, a hormone that tells the body to burn stored fat—which is often found in the stomach area.

5 weight-loss tips you've never heard before

Problem: You’re eating the wrong food

Without the right diet, even the most rigorous cardio regimen is useless. “That means cutting calories,” says Susan B. Roberts, a professor of nutrition and psychiatry at Tufts University in Boston and author of The Instinct Diet (Workman Publishing Company). And there are tricks that help, too. Drinking coffee—when part of a weight-loss diet—may also trim the stomach slightly, and the caffeine may speed up the metabolism. Roberts suggests one to three cups of coffee a day.

Dairy’s role in weight loss is controversial (some studies have shown a strong connection; others haven’t). On the pro side: In a University of Tennessee study, overweight adults on a low-calorie diet who had 1,100 milligrams of calcium daily lost 81 percent more stomach fat than those who got only 400 to 500 milligrams of calcium per day. Getting three daily servings of dairy is a reasonable goal, says Michael B. Zemel, director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee.

What to avoid? White, starchy carbohydrates top the list. People who chose white bread over whole grains gained about half an inch around the middle every year, according to a study from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

Eating more of these foods will help you shed pounds.

Problem: You’re doing the wrong moves

“Crunches only work the superficial muscles at the front of your torso,” says Shawn McCormack, director of and head instructor at the Body, a Manhattan fitness studio. “They don’t do anything for the muscles that run around the entire core of your body like a corset, or the oblique muscles along your sides.” These are the muscles that act like your body’s own Spanx, drawing your midsection up and in. One of the best ways to strengthen them is by holding a simple plank position. For an extra challenge, lift your hips up an inch or two and then move them back.

Pilates moves are powerful ab sculptors, says Michele Olson, professor of exercise physiology at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama. In a study pitting mat-based Pilates moves against crunches, the Pilates exercises were all more effective on the abs than crunches were. Crunches can still be one part of your routine, but doing them ad nauseam is an exercise in futility. Two to five sets of 15 to 20 reps are plenty.

Problem: You only use your abdominal muscles rarely

Whether you’re on the treadmill or doing push-ups, your navel should feel like it’s being pulled toward your spine as your ribs drop slightly toward your pelvis. “Breathing deeply, in through your nose and out through your mouth, is the best way to keep your core muscles contracted and engaged in any workout,” says Laurie Cole, an instructor at SoulCycle, a cycling studio in New York City. And it should extend beyond the gym. “My abs are always activated,” says personal trainer Kacy Duke. This not only strengthens the torso over time but also improves posture, which instantly minimizes bulges.

7 fitness tips from one of Hollywood's hottest celebrity trainers.

Problem: Your genes aren’t solely to blame.

Fat distribution is at least 30 percent—maybe as much as 60 percent—determined by genetics. But biology isn’t necessarily destiny. Though scientists have identified specific genes that affect the propensity to store fat around the middle or in the hips and thighs, any gene pool can be overcome. “You’ll probably have to do more work to maintain a flat stomach, but biology doesn’t rule how you exercise or what you eat,” says Olson.

Gisele Bundchen: Not Pregnant

It's okay, guys. You can go back to thinking that Tom Brady has never Gisele Bundchen naked.

Now that the star quarterback has shot down rumors that his wife is pregnant, we can stop hating the guy. After all, three Super Bowl titles and the eternal affection of one of the world's greatest sports cities is enough.

Does Brady really need to remind us that he goes home and nails Gisele every night, as well?!?

When reporters asked the New England Patriots star about the pregnancy rumors this week, Brady shook his head and said, "No." He added that "one is enough," referring to his son, John, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

Britney Spears Forgets Time of the Month

Embattled music superstar Britney Spears appears to have gotten her $h!t together of late, at least in comparison to the Lost Years of 2005-2007.

Embarking on a successful worldwide Circus tour, staying out of the psych ward and taking the kids on vacation in the Bahamas - life's going well.

There are still glimmers of the crazy, however - and let's just this incident was the opposite of her famous concert wardrobe malfunction from April.

See where we're going with this? Read on ...

The celebrity recently sat down for an Elle magazine shoot, a New York Post spy says, and it was a big mess. Literally. According to the report:

"They dressed her in all these beautiful couture clothes - and, well, let's just say she forgot what time of the month it was. It wasn't pretty."

That is so gross. Yet we are not entirely shocked.

If we knew, waking up this morning, that there would be a story going around about a star menstruating on clothes during a photo shoot, Britney Spears definitely would have been our first guess. We would also have called in sick.

On the flip side, at least she didn't let her dog defecate on the clothes, as she did at an OK! Magazine shoot last year. At least we assume not.
